Vilvoorde, a town of cycling fans

Vilvoorde has a rich cycling tradition. The Vilvoorde Grand Prix was held there for the first time in 1931. This was the first professional race that Eddy Merckx won. Other winners include former world champion Eloi Meulenberg, Theo Middelkamp and Briek Schotte. In 1951 Jan Bogaerts, himself from Vilvoorde, won the race for his home crowd.

Vilvoorde also organised the Belgian championships for professionals twice. In 1965 Eddy Merckx was beaten to the finishing line by Walter Godefroot. In 1975 Walter Godefroot was the first Belgian to win the famous race to the finish on the Champs Elysées during the last stage of the Tour de France. He is best known as the former manager of the T-Mobile team.
